Happy Emotional Wellness Month

Happy Emotional Wellness Month

October is a special month. Not only because it hosts one of the best holidays in my opinion, Halloween. But because it’s also Emotional Wellness Month. This is the month where we learn to take care of ourselves and our mental health. As we start to feel more and more overwhelmed, it’s good to have a month to learn about and practice how to relax our body and mind, and let everything that’s causing stress in our lives to be released.

Not all people are the same when it comes to improving their mental and emotional health. Everybody has their recipe and I find for most cases, people want to relax and find tranquility, to help find peace within. For me, I like to hang out with friends, go on adventures/walks, and do something I’ve never done before. As these help me maintain my mental and emotional wellness.

Here are 6 concrete ways you can practice emotional wellness every day:

  • Sleep - Make it priority to get plenty of sleep. Most people need 7-8 hours.

  • Food - Eat healthy food, limit caffeine and alcohol consumption, and replace high sodium and fatty fast food with leafy vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Food does affect your mood, so start fueling your body and mind with good for you foods.

  • Get Moving - Regular exercise is great for your body and your mind. Movement improves circulation, breathing, and your self-confidence. Exercise doesn't have to mean running 5 miles and lifting weights in the gym. Find ways to move that you enjoy from dancing, to yoga, to a brisk walk with a friend. What ever you choose, make it a habit 3-5 times a week and watch your body and emotions change for the better!

  • Practice being Mindful - Dwelling in the past and worrying about the future means missing out on the now. Practice being in the moment and fully present. It will reduce your stress, improve your mental well-being, and help you build stronger, more authentic and supportive relationships.

  • Spend Time doing what you Love - Set aside time for hobbies or activities that you enjoy. Make a commitment to regular "me time". Garden, listen to music, make art, write, sing, dance. Giving yourself time to do the things you love will help you recharge, renew your passion for life, and give you a healthy outlet for expression.

  • Invest in your Relationships - Strong, supportive relationships provide us with a safe place to give and receive love, acceptance, and understanding. Remove the toxic energy vampires from your life and focus on building and maintaining the relationships that provide mutual support, healthy boundaries, unconditional love and acceptance.
