Five Ways to to Manage Period Bloating

This week I wanted to talk about period bloating and the best way to prevent it/help deal with it in the best way possible. While doing my research, I found that 85% of women experience bloating. This occurs because of hormones and also when the lining of your uterus gets thicker.

According to Maggie Smith, MD, when estrogen levels are high your body will begin to retain more water. However, hormones aren’t the only reason for bloating. Other causes include; what vitamins and minerals you take, diet, especially if it has high amounts of sodium, and your caffeine and alcohol intake. For most women, bloating is the most uncomfortable symptom when it comes to periods. 


Some helpful ways to prevent bloating include:

  1. Eating the right foods, including ones with less salt.
  2. Drinking a lot of water
  3. Skipping alcohol and caffeine for a few days
  4. Exercise 
  5. Taking birth control as it can reduce PMS symptoms
